This course is very much a hands-on, experimental course, designed to give much freedom on choosing the research problem, encouraging innovation, and producing viable and well thought-out IoT projects,
The material is based on Dr Davide Brunelli's Basics of IoT courseware for University of Trento Master degree program students.
After that has been discussed, much of the actual material consists of issue-based research into material available on the Internet regarding Arduinos, ESP32s, LORA devices, Raspberry Pis and other devices.
Heikki Hietala
This course, while it has no client for now, is a good starting point for those interested in making a career out of IoT. It is hoped that in the future, real clients will provide the course with interesting research projects.
Pasila Campus
No exam, grading is based on project.
English
This course is connected to the University of Trento, Italy, Technical University of Delft, the Netherlands, and other international partners as listed in the EU project "IoT Proto Labs".
16.01.2023 - 17.03.2023
Most of the learning assignments are inititated by the students themselves and solvd as part of the course.
Students are required to keep a learninig diary every time they work on the course, and to try to provide as detailed a picture of their own learning process as possible.
02.01.2023 - 13.01.2023
This course is completed in eight weeks. The first two weeks are spent discussing Dr Brunelli's material, after which an ideation session and idea post-production session will be held to identify the projects the students will attempt to finish in the latter part of the course.
It is possible to come to the teacher with an idea of the student's own, and to see if it can qualify as an IoT project.
Feedback is given during the course and after it, in the last session of the implementation, when the projects are looked into and discussed in class.
15 - 40
This course is graded 40% on the learning diary, 60% on the project work, including the finished project.
Of the diary, the student's progress, handling of issues during the project, learning points, discussion of personal learning, and attitude towards the course are assessed.
Of the project, the student's initiative, persistence, problem solving skills and problem solving mindset are assessed.
While it is not necessary to produce a fully functional device, its viability and the remaining amount of work will be taken into account.

The instructions is holding a more detailed quidelines for example teacher's advises and tiplist to help the student in finding the relevant viewpoints and references
2) Practical project management problems, events where the student shall give his/her best understanding by writing an essaybabout solution for relaxing a troublesome situation or a minor project management case (for example how to manage scope creep or leaving expert or such). Writing the answer is supported by tips and guidelines to give some ideas for a starting point.
3) Hands-on tasks would be nice but they are highly difficult to fulfill due the type/format of the course (so far they are as options left to be fulfilled in future)
02.01.2023 - 19.05.2023
The overall timeline is 12 weeks and the theme-wise bundles (seven) and the deadlines for them are:
- themes 1-2 assignments submitted within the first 3 course weeks

So far no alternative way of learning available on this course except the RPL
15 - 30
Evaluation is based on the 1) studies and 2) exam. A more accurate info is available on the course pages. In future it may be possible that the exam becomes more pivotal in evaluation.
Grade 5
The studies are more like insights in given subjects inspired and driven by the suggested references and own findings rather than reporting the facts from the references like they appear on the text. The study is holding too a conclusions part and rationale as an introduction. Length as required. In general, the quality of the text is excellent and rich in facts. Submissions are done in time.
Grade 3
The studies are based on the suggested references, no own findings essentially. Besides the findings/facts from the references, some own thoughts are present on text related to the subject. A short conclusion part at the end and sense making in the beginning are found but the text is more like driven by references (producing the text in a reporting manner). Length close to the required size. In general, the quality of the text is nice offering somewhat an effortless reading experience. Submissions are done in time.
Grade 1
The study is based just on a one of the given references, if any. The text is typically hastily composed by picking some of the facts from the references and the integrity of the study is modest.
Submission is in time or slightly delayed. The learning of the given subject is partial which is evidenced by the quality and the general impression (gut feeling) of the study.
Note! The characterization above doesn't bring forth the alternative ways of producing studies like writing the study fully based on own experiences provided with a thin theory part which could be an excellent study. That's why certain characteristics may give a push up to the score which are explained on the Course Moodle pages and shortly here: relevance of the facts and the size of study; synthetic analysis type of approach in producing the text, insightful findings/own ponderings, use of examples and linkage to project management practicalities, richness of facts (and relevance); the ideas and flow of the text are easy to follow, no plagiarism (a subject to fine)

The course is allocated on periods 1-2 and 3-4, lectured during two periods. The course could be passed on two ways, (1) the passing grade option, a short course, where the done work is less and the grade will stay lower compared to (2) the standard course. The grade achieved by doing the short course is typically 1-2/5 but could be pushed up by doing some extra work.
The lecturing is held online on every second, students preparing meanwhile the given assignments in pairs (or small groups if more than 40 participants). The overall timeline of the short course is 10 weeks. The course is started by a pre-assignment which will ensure your seat on the course.
Each of the module (see on next) is holding four assigments yet there are too, four short assignments of the project management key concepts (individual).
The nominal output of writing essays is ca. max 4 pages per week plus the short key term assignments each of them could be answered on 1-1,5 pages.

In spring 2022, a real-life case example is used (case ”CRM for Company X” in cooperation with company called BIIT). You will work on tasks related to the case throughout Requirements Analysis gaining practical experience in a concrete setting. In addition, the case and the setting is analyzed and discussed in the broader context of system development lifecycle and development models. Other settings and cases are also used to show how requirements are analyzed applying different models.
This implementation is based on contact learning meaning that weekly classes provide the basis for learning the course topics. Some of the learning activities can only be completed in-class such as some in-class activities and exams. In addition to the classes, the participants are expected to work outside classes. Instruction is provided mainly during classes and using Moodle and to a lesser extent, if necessary, via e-mail.
Material will be available on Moodle. The main course book is Ashrafi, N. and Ashrafi, H., 2008 or newer, Object-Oriented Systems Analysis and Design, Pearson Higher Ed (or Prentice Hall), ISBN-13: 9780131354791, ISBN-10: 0131354795, chapters 4, 1, 5, 6 and 2.5. Supporting books are Bocij, P., Greasley, A. & Hickie, S. 2015 (5th ed.), Business information systems: technology, development and management for the e-business, Pearson and Robertson, S. and Robertson, J. 2013 (3rd ed.), Mastering the Requirements Process, Addison-Wesley, ISBN: 9780321815743.

Project learning in connection to the case. Schedules and content affected by the case.
This course is closer to the graduation and requires more mature approach from students than earlier courses. Only take this course if you are able to work together with other people and understand how professionals learn together.
There is no book that would cover all the topics. A multitude of materials and models will be covered and used. Not details of the material is required for best grades.
Juhani Välimäki
The project has been done practically always to a customer.
Pasila Campus
The course has so many little quizzes that re-exam rules do not apply to them. Still at least two chances to improve each are provided. Dates and times are negotiated with students based on whether the case starts immediately or e.g. after eight weeks. And also based on what times are suitable for those students who want to retake. It's impossible to give a schedule in the beginning that would hold to the end. And thus it makes no sense.
English
Students are mostly non-Finnish. Exchange students sometimes take this course but should take it only with caution. Do they have enough background in backend, frontend and database development? Do they have enough hours for this course?
16.01.2023 - 19.05.2023
There are too many assignments to be listed before. Assignments also vary based on what is needed in the case and what students need the most. There are no specific evaluated assignments with scoring but the general contribution might have slight grade raising effect.
Assignments are no more instructed "click here and then click there" -detail like on basic courses. Successful completion of tasks requires in most cases: Following teacher's demonstrations, asking questions, thinking, then starting own work and still looking for information - like things happen in real working life.
02.01.2023 - 13.01.2023
The learning is more intensive in the first period of the semester. There are some fixed topics that are needed in the case usually in this order, though based on the case or starting level of the students changes might happen:
Scrum, difficult features of EcmaScript, backend, architecture, database, frontend, git process, linux and setting up needed servers, other topics needed for that semester's case.
It's more than recommended to take the Software Project course at the same time. Otherwise learning the topics might be tough. And there is no week where the estimated 10-12h per week would not be reached for this course only, taking into account that this course has emphasis on the beginning of the semester.
25h per week has to be reserved for both courses at the same time.

In Bite this is the first sofware development project course (Finnish curriculum differs by three courses, status at 27.11.2022) where students learn to manage a Scrum project, possible plan product, implement it, communicate and work in group of 10-25 developers working on common code, with version management. The advisory and improvement of the project skills is constant as most of the students are beginners in many aspects.
There are even too many models learned on this course. But complete mastering is not expected. The learning and utilization of the same models will contínue still on the next semester project course, or student's own other challenges.
There are of course books on Software Engineering. They tend to be old fashioned emphasizing the tradional heavy design and planning. The agile development is often just glued on the top. But no single book can cover all the topics. The contents are trule multidisciplinary.
