Schedule

Introduction to mentoring in Teams 1 hour
Group meetings 3 x 2 hours = 6 hours
Mentoring meetings with a partner, minimum 4 x 1.5 hours = 6 hours
Independent study (taking notes on mentoring meetings) 2.5 hours
Assessment of own learning (learning diary) 2.5 hours

Participation in three group meetings is mandatory. They are held on evenings from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Pasila campus. The dates will be announced later. Group meetings are not facilitated remotely.

Individual meetings will be arranged separately with the mentor. Meetings can be held remotely or at a location agreed upon by both parties.

Implementation methods, demonstration and Work&Study

The course consists of three compulsory meetings (2 hours) at the campus and at least of four one-to-one meetings with a mentor (4 x 1,5 h). The format of the bilateral meetings (face-to-face/online) will be agreed between the student and the mentor. Meetings with the mentor should be at least once a month, but may be more if the mentor is willing.

Before the start of the course, the student accepted for the period will receive a questionnaire by email. The student can fill in preferences about the mentor's degree and in which field the mentor is currently working. The course organiser will then try to find the best possible mentor for the student.

The student and the mentor will meet each other at the first face-to-face meeting for the first time. Attendance is therefore essential. If the student is unable to attend the other subsequent on-site meetings, there will be written assignments to make up for the absence.

Intro

One credit point is awarded for the course completed. The benefit of the course comes to the student in the form of a personal mentoring relationship and expanded professional networks. Participation in the course does not automatically promise an internship or a new job, but it does open up new paths to get closer to professional goals.

Students are responsible for setting their own goals and learning in a mentoring relationship. With a mentor, you can look at your goals realistically and strive to achieve them as well as possible.

Teaching methods and instruction

The course is implemented as a mentoring program. The aim is to find a personal mentor for each student from among Haaga-Helia alumni. Alternatively, students can invite their own professional role model to be their mentor in the program. Sometimes we use group mentoring.

Mentoring is about learning together and sharing experiences and expertise. The interaction aims to be reciprocal, with both parties learning new things from each other.

The student sets their own goals for mentoring. These goals may relate to career planning, finding a specific internship or job, challenges in the final stages of their studies, self-development, getting to know Finnish work life and culture, or deepening their expertise. The program aims to enable the student's professional growth and strengthen working life relationships.

The mentoring program consists of one-on-one mentoring meetings between the mentor and the mentee(s), orientation and joint group meetings, as well as self-study materials in Moodle. The group meetings review the goals and rules of mentoring, draw up a mentoring agreement, and develop interaction skills. The course also provides opportunities for networking with other participants.

Those accepted onto the course must respond to a preliminary questionnaire sent by email within the specified time limit.

NOTE! The course is open to all degree students regardless of campus, degree program, or specialization. Master's students can enroll, but the credits are not included in the degree.

Working life connections

The course is implemented in cooperation with Haaga-Helia alumni, who act as mentors in the program.

Alternatively, students can invite anyone they admire professionally to participate in the mentoring program. This could be, for example:
1) a representative from a specific workplace where the student hopes to find employment
2) a role model known from the media, Haaga-Helia alumni stories, or LinkedIn
3) a person who lives in a country where the student hopes to move for work.

Exam dates and re-exam possibilities

There is no exam included in the implementation.

Learning assignments

After being accepted onto the course, you will receive a preliminary questionnaire by email, which you must respond in time in order to participate. Mentoring pairs will be formed based on the questionnaire.

During the course, you will submit a mentoring agreement and a learning diary in the form of a short report, as instructed separately.
