Intro

This course explores the Northern Baltic Sea as a connector of economies and cultures. It focuses on Finnish and Estonian business cultures and the opportunities created by a shared maritime region. In addition, it highlights the role of foreign trade for Finland and examines how sustainability and responsibility guide the development of maritime transport.

Learning objectives

A student who has completed this course or acquired equivalent competence will be able to:

- master the key features of Finnish and Estonian business cultures
- demonstrate knowledge of the economic cooperation between Finland and Estonia
- understand the significance of Finland’s foreign trade and maritime transport, including sustainable development issues
- can identify and explain the geographical, political, and historical factors connecting the Baltic Sea region (Finland and Estonia)

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

Pass: The student knows the key features of Finnish and Estonian business cultures, masters the basics of economic cooperation between the two countries, and is able to explain the significance of foreign trade and maritime transport from the perspective of sustainable development. In addition, the student can identify and explain the geographical, political, and historical factors connecting the Northern Baltic Sea region (Finland and Estonia).

Fail: The student does not know the key features of Finnish and Estonian business cultures, does not master the basics of economic cooperation, and is not able to explain the significance of foreign trade and maritime transport from the perspective of sustainable development. The student also does not show the ability to identify or explain the geographical, political, and historical factors connecting the Baltic Sea region.
