Intro
Welcome to start learning Spanish! You will learn to introduce and describe yourself, your studies, work and hobbies. You will get information about Spain and Spanish-speaking countries, their peoples and cultures. You will learn useful everyday language.
¡Bienvenidos!
Materials
Buenas Migas 1. Katriina Kurki, Olli-Pekka Lindgren, Alberto Miranda Cañellas, Juan Rafols. Finn Lectura. Otavan kustantamo 2022. (Uudistettu painos): Units 1-6.
The teacher will provide an English vocabulary for the book.
A lot of extra material provided by the teacher in each class.
Teaching methods and instruction
Contact course in one period, twice a week. On Wednesdays at the Porvoo campus from 14:00 to 16:45 and on Fridays remotely from 11:00 to 13:45. Please note, however, that the course final exam is on Friday, December 11 at 11:00 in a classroom at the Porvoo campus (it is a paper-based exam, not remote and not on a computer).
Contact classes are important for practicing pronunciation and discussion: a lot of pair and groups exercises are done in class. For each class there will be homework, because learning the vocabulary and grammar require a lot of repetition.
Working life connections
Useful small talk & basic Spanish about ourselves.
English is not spoken widely in the Spanish speaking world!
Exam dates and re-exam possibilities
Final written exam on Friday, December 12 in classroom PC/1421 at 11:00. The exam will be paper-based in the classroom (not remote and not on a computer).
Before the final exam, the student must have completed and submitted to the teacher a mandatory course video in which they talk about themselves based on what they have learned, using the provided set of questions as a guide. This video is an important part of the final assessment.
Internationality
We will learn how to navigate through the Spanish speaking world. Language & culture knowledge is a true barrier breaking superpower!
Possibility to operate with international teams and international lectures. Possible guest lecturers from international organizations and partner universities.
Completion alternatives
Demonstration (of earlier skills and knowledge in the course content). More information from responsible teacher Maria Ruohtula.
Learning assignments
The students make a video about themselves in Spanish. The video is assessed on a scale 1-5.
Assessment methods
In contact and online courses of the study modules, attendance at the scheduled teaching sessions is required. If you are absent from more than 25% of the sessions, your grade will drop by one level. If you are absent from more than 50% of the sessions, the module will be failed.
Assessment (0–5):
The final course grade is composed of the following mandatory components:
10% enthusiastic participation in teaching.
20% video: “Talk about yourself” (to be submitted before the final exam)
70% final exam (December 12, 2025)
