Schedule

The virtual course is scheduled to commence at the beginning of 2025, in accordance with the Haaga-Helia UAS academic calendar. In this virtual course, students are expected to engage in independent study, with the option of interacting with classmates through the learning platform should the need arise.

Implementation methods, demonstration and Work&Study

The Virtual course is an independent study course of 5 course-credits.
The course is self-paced, with students working online individually or in groups. Active individual or group work will be a requirement for this course. Some course implementations may include online teaching sessions, but these typically require a student to be online no more than twice a month.

The studies utilise student-centred, research-oriented, and functional teaching methods. Guidance and feedback are provided through the Haaga-Helia UAS online learning environment.

Recognition of Learning. The Recognition of Learning tasks are to be completed by the student within the first two weeks, following the instructions provided in the virtual course at the beginning of the course. Recognition of Learning can be used to complete either part or all of the virtual course.

Intro

Welcome to the virtual course to explore contemporary perspectives on the topics of Knowledge Management (KM) and KM Leadership. KM is a managerial tool and KM Leadership methods for IT and business development through which we understand organisations as entities that e.g. collect data. The course covers topics such as KM leadership and KM teams and how their activities contribute to organisational development. During the virtual course you will study academic and international study materials independently or in a group. The course will be an exploration and reflection of KM & KM leadership from both IT and management perspectives across organisational boundaries.

Materials

The course material will be updated on a regular basis, in accordance with the progress of the course theme. It is based on course books, research articles, webinars and discussion forums. It is accessible via the study platform.

Teaching methods and instruction

NOTICE: On the first day of the course, the Moodle platform will be open to students at 17:00.
Upon successful completion of the virtual course or the acquisition of equivalent knowledge in another context, the student is able to
• identify trends in Knowledge Management (KM) and Knowledge Leadership (KL) and observe their impact from both an IT and a business perspective.
• use theoretical models and frameworks for the comprehension of knowledge management (KM) in a business context.
• can recognize and analyse KM as a component of business development opportunities, and explain the importance of KM and knowledge leadership in today's business environment and organisations.
• Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to demonstrate to understand the significance of knowledge management (KM) and knowledge leadership in business. A broad knowledge of business and information technology, and a fundamental understanding of information management, will help student succeed in this course.

This fully virtual course is an independent study course. There are no special prerequisites but the student must be capable of self-directed schedule planning and independent learning without supervision during the implementation. If needed, the guidance and feedback are provided through the study platform, the Moodle learning environment.

The course content and its materials are aligned by the integration of knowledge management and leadership in information technology and business sectors, as observed across several business cases of business sectors and the public sector.

Exam dates and re-exam possibilities

The virtual course does not include any specific online exam. The students are required to complete amount of coursework as an individual assignments during the course time-frame.

Internationality

The course covers literature from around the globe, with case studies and practices from English, French, and German-speaking countries. In Finland, English-language IT plays an important role in business.

Completion alternatives

The course is implemented in fully virtual mode without contact lessons or virtual meetings. It is based on self-directed learning and individual assignments proceeding within a flexible time frame.

Recognition of prior learning (RPL)
If students have acquired the required competence in previous work tasks, recreational activities or on another certified course, they can show their competence via a demonstration. The demonstration must be agreed with the course teacher. Learning assignments

The course topics include study cases and practices. In order to pass the course, students are required to complete a given mandatory assignments by the specified deadline. The assignments of the course also teach the skills needed in Master's studies, such as data mining, reading research articles, and critical writing, as well as a broad understanding of knowledge management and its themes.

Assessment methods

A course is considered complete for assessment purposes when all required assignments, essays and online discussions have been returned. However, the entire course may be assessed during the virtual course. Final grades will be published three weeks after the end of the course.

When the implementation type of the course is contact, online or blended it is required that the student is present during those teaching hours that are marked in the study schedule. If you are absent more than 25%, your grade will be lowered by one. If you are absent more than 50%, the course is failed.

Evaluation criteria.
Assessment criteria. Scale from 0 to 5:
* Assessment criteria - grade 1. The course assignments have been completed 40% successfully.
* Assessment criteria - grade 3. The course assignments have been completed 70% successfully.
* Assessment criteria - grade 5. The course assignments have been completed 90% successfully.
