The course takes place twice a week from August to December during the school weeks.
During the intensive weeks there are no classes.

You can complete the course unit by demonstrating or by Work&Study even if the course unit doesn't have DEMO or WORKSTUDY implementations. More information about recognition of learning at Haaga-Helia's website: https://www.haaga-helia.fi/en/career-planning/recognition-learning.

DEMO tests for Finnish courses will be organized four times a year. Ask the teacher for the exact dates. The test contains both written and oral part. The test will be done at school campus.

Intro

Hei ja tervetuloa! Welcome to a journey to Finnish language and culture! You will learn to pronounce Finnish and communicate in some simple everyday situations. By actively participating in classes and studying at home, you will create a solid basis for further Finnish studies.

The book used: Suomen mestari 1. Finn Lectura. (new edition!) Chapters 1–5.

Teaching methods and instruction

The course includes both 1) contact hours and 2) independent studies:
1) Oral and written exercises individually and in pairs, group work, tests
2) Homework and preparation for lessons, exams and assignments.

Active self-study between the lessons is expected and part of the course.

Working life connections

The course develops the students Finnish language skills that are needed in working life in Finland.

Exam dates and re-exam possibilities

There will be a mid-course exam and a final exam. The students will be informed about the days during the course.

It's possible to re-take the final exam, and day will be agreed with the students during the course.

Completion alternatives

Recognition of prior learning (RPL):
The students who start their studies in BITE programme and already know some Finnish, can pass the course and gain the credit points by attending a level test. Written and oral parts of the test are organized during the orientation weeks in August or January. The RPL test can only be taken once.

Learning assignments

There will be homework and exercises for the students to do.
All assignments must be submitted within the agreed schedule.
The deadlines are available in Moodle.

Assessment methods

Continuous assessment 40 %
Regular and active participation is crucial to your progress. Coming in time, being prepared, doing activities, answering questions and speaking Finnish as much as possible are all part of the continuous demonstration of your language skills.
Supervised assignments 60 %

NB! When the implementation type of the course is contact, online or blended it is required that the student is present during those teaching hours that are marked in the study schedule. If you are absent more than 25%, your grade will be lowered by one. If you are absent more than 50%, the course is failed.
