Entrepreneurship, industry-related vocabulary, cultural differences, grammar, presentation skills, creating one's own personal brand, spoken and written communication, meetings and negotiations.

Implementation methods, demonstration and Work&Study

CONTACT for contact courses. In contact courses the teacher and the student are physically in the same location on campus, usually at a specifically scheduled time.

BLENDED for blended courses. In blended courses contact teaching (daytime, in the evening or intensively) is combined with online studies independently and/or in cooperation with other students.

ONLINE for online courses. In online courses the teacher and the student are connected only through information and communications technology. The implementation includes scheduled online studies (e.g. lectures or group work).

VIRTUAL for virtual courses. In virtual courses the student studies independently in a virtual learning environment. Students can communicate with other students and the teacher through a virtual learning environment. Students can complete assignments and possible exams at a time that suits them best.

EVENING for evening courses where all meetings start after 4 pm.

DEMO for those with previous knowledge who wish to complete the course through a demonstration of competence.
The demonstration of competence consists of an essay assignment and a presentation day, where you will give a presentation and complete an exam. There will be multiple dates available.

The essay assignment, the presentation and the exam will be evaluated by a teacher designated by your degree. The content of your demonstration is degree specific.

You will find more detailed instructions on how to complete the course through demonstration of competence in the DEMO Moodle. First, you need to enroll on the Professional English DEMO implementation in Peppi. Then, within a week (not in June or July), you´ll have access to the DEMO Moodle implementation.

Intro

Learn principles of contemporary Professional English! This course helps you to update your multicultural communication skills: you’ll learn useful vocabulary of your chosen field and gain skills for competing in the English-speaking job market. In addition, background knowledge of cultural theories will broaden your understanding of human behavior in business meetings and other professional environments.

Materials

Online materials on Moodle, information sources and database available to Haaga-Helia's students (critical evaluation is key), and self-study materials recommended by teacher/s.

Teaching methods and instruction

The course is delivered entirely online without any in-person teaching or webinars. Studying requires an adequate background level and self-direction, as well as a willingness to collaborate for the Shark Tank video-recorded presentation done in pairs.

NOTE! Confirm your participation by submitting your first course assignment during the first week of the course.
You can send messages to the instructor via Moodle’s Discussion Forum or by email.
In Moodle, there are quizzes, practice assignments, and graded assignments.

Working life connections

The course prepares for situations requiring English skills at work.
The LinkedIn assignment helps to showcase qualifications and strengths and enhance profile visibility to attract potential employers. There is a video CV option for those who do not wish to use LinkedIn.
The Shark Tank presentation offers an insight into how to compose and deliver a compelling sales pitch.

Exam dates and re-exam possibilities

No exams, no re-exams. The course must be completed fully during the relevant period(s).
There are no retakes for the individual learning assignments. Should a student decide to drop out, their participation is marked with a zero grade.

Internationality

The focus is on English as the language of international communication, business, trade and technological development.
The course curriculum has benefited from collaboration of multiple teachers with their different cultural contexts, work experience and academic backgrounds.

We offer multicultural teamwork opportunities and use cases for students.

Completion alternatives

Virtual, blended, online, contact, recognition of prior learning.

There are practice exercises for each topic area (80% completion requirement).
