Recognition of Learning
If you have prior research and development competences, the course can be completed as a demonstration. For more information please see Haaga-Helia web page, https://www.haaga-helia.fi/en/recognition-learning
To demonstrate your prior learning, please, enroll to a DEMO implementation of this course. Detailed instructions about the demonstration are available in the Moodle site of the DEMO implementation.
Intro
Development belongs to each and every one in the organizations. During this course you will learn the basics of research and development methods. You will also learn about scientific research methods and tools for ideation, innovation and development. The primary aim is not to turn you in to professional researcher - but you will learn how to create surveys, recognize different types of interviews and how to analyze the data you have gathered. After completing this course, you will be able to apply your new skills in working life situations as well as start your thesis in Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences.
Materials
Learning material will be provided in Moodle. The Moodle page for the course will be accessible latest by the starting date of the course
Teaching methods and instruction
This course is preparatory for starting your thesis. During the course, students will develop a preliminary idea for their thesis and, at the end, register for the thesis process. It is not recommended to complete this course before the thesis starts.
The pedagogical approach is "learning by doing." The course includes two in-person sessions per week, where the themes of the course are discussed and students reflect on their thesis topics. Successful learning is achieved through active participation in contact teaching and independent work.
The final grade is based on assignments defined in Moodle. Some tasks are automatically scored, while others are evaluated by the course instructor. At the end of the course, students complete a synthesis assignment and register as thesis writers in Wihi.
This course is included in all Haaga-Helia degree programs, but this particular implementation is targeted at Information Technology students, meaning the materials and exercises are tailored to the field. Learning objectives and assessment criteria are consistent across all implementations.
Working life connections
The connection to working life is established through development projects and the thesis topic.
Exam dates and re-exam possibilities
There is no final exam. The course is completed by submitting theme-based assignments and a synthesis assignment.
Internationality
The student body and material provided are international.
Completion alternatives
This implementation is contact, but there are other alternative implementations blended, online, and virtual available
Learning assignments
Five assignments guide students to plan their own thesis:
Objective of the Thesis and Theoretical Framework.
Writing the Thesis: Structure of the Thesis
Qualitative Research Methods and Development Methods
Quantitative Research Methods.
Your own thesis topic.
Assessment methods
The assignments are graded using the scale from zero (0) to five (5). Each assignment is 20% of the total grade. All assignments have to be submitted by the deadline. If you submit your assignment late or if there is no submission, the assignment grade is zero.
Wihi enrollment is assessed as pass (done) or failed (not done). Note: this is a required part to complete the course successfully.
