After successful completion of the course the student
• knows how to speak in a variety or situations in a professional and convincing manner in English
• knows how to write to a variety of target groups in a professional and convincing manner in English
• knows how to communicate in a variety of negotiations, meetings and seminars effectively, appropriately and politely in English
• knows how to communicate in irregularity situations ie. when things do not go as expected
• knows how to read and interpret demanding English text effectively and efficiently while understanding its contents

• Challenging situations in hotel restaurant and tourism industry: how to present and communicate
• Communication in writing, for example providing information, notice or announcement, a financial statement
• Situations related to negotiations, meetings and seminars
• Communications in irregularity situations
• Topical, current industry-related texts
Grade 1
The student knows English and despite obvious difficulties in spoken situations shows they can manage in an English-speaking situation. When assisted, the student can prepare and carry out an argument, introductions, presentations, and answer questions. Using help tools, the student can read and summarize an industry-related text for the most part. Sometimes the student knows how to deduce text contents, when the topic is familiar; eg. related to leadership, management, marketing, accounting or other business related field. The student seldom uses other tools than dictionaries when searching for information.
Grade 3
The student knows English well and can present their case clearly and answer questions in a presentation situation. The student can make a clear argument or a short presentation also without lengthy preparation. The student can read and summarize an English industry or business related text in Finnish* or English. The student knows how to deduce some textual content when the topic is familiar; eg. related to leadership, management, marketing, accounting or other business related field. The student knows how to use tools and assistance and knows how to evaluate the validity of the source. * Finnish is not a requirement, if you study in an English-speaking degree programme.
Grade 5
The student knows English fluently and can present their case in a well-structured manner also efficiently without advance preparation, and can answer questions in a convincing and polite manner. The student can quickly and efficiently read and summarize an English industry or business related text in Finnish* or English into an impeccable format. The student knows how to deduce textual content when the topic is familiar; eg. related to leadership, management, marketing, accounting or other business related field. The student knows how to use tools and information sources well, eg. by searching for extra information when needed. * Finnish is not a requirement, if you study in an English-speaking degree programme.
Working life connections
The contents of the course are closely related to business, focusing on hospitality and tourism industry.
Internationality
The topics introduce a variety of practises closely connected to the English-speaking world as well as the English language as part of the everyday Finnish working life.
