    Learning objectives
    After completing the course, the student
    • understands the different functions of sentence and paragraph types to express information
    • acquires an increased vocabulary suited for Academic English
    • learns the standard and academically accepted structure of an essay/report/thesis to better express one’s intentions more clearly in writing
    • knows how to use linking words and phrases, punctuation
    • understands and masters paraphrasing, writing summaries and abstracts
    • acquires skills in structuring a text according to academic standards
    • becomes more aware of one’s own writing by editing his/her own work

    Before taking this course, the student must have completed the Professional English Key Competence course or corresponding RPL process.

    Contents
    Students learn, from the elements of the sentence and the paragraph, an approach that is expandable to encompass the demands of writing a text in academically appropriate English, as follows:

    • Logical Division of Ideas
    • Process Paragraphs
    • Comparison and Contrast Paragraphs
    • Definition Paragraphs
    • Essay Organization
    Assessment criteria
    Assessment criteria - grade 1
    The student is able to apply the most central key concepts of Academic English in an understandable manner.
    The student is able to manage in advanced professional spoken and written situations with assistance and time for preparation.
    The student is able to communicate quite fluently and use appropriate language and terminology in the global context despite some obvious difficulties.
    The student is still learning how to convey and understand shades of meaning.
    The student is familiar with academic language usage but needs practice in intercultural context.
    Assessment criteria - grade 3
    The student is able to apply central key concepts of Academic English fluently and is easily understood. / in an easily understandable manner.
    The student is able to contribute actively in advanced academic spoken and written situations with a short time for preparation.
    The student is able to communicate fluently and use a range of appropriate language and terminology in the global context using Academic English without obvious difficulties.
    The student recognizes and is able to use some shades of meaning appropriately when needed.
    The student is able to use academic language skills in intercultural context fluently.
    Assessment criteria - grade 5
    The student is able to apply key concepts of Academic English fluently in a versatile manner.
    The student is able to contribute actively in spoken and written situations using Academic English with or without preparation.
    The student is able to communicate very fluently and use a wide range of appropriate language and terminology in the global context without difficulties.
    The student is able to convey shades of meaning effortlessly.
    The student is able to use academic language skills in intercultural context effectively in a convincing manner.
