Preliminary schedule:

Week 1: Course introduction, the role of finance, and strategy-supporting metrics
Week 2: Long-term planning/modeling
Week 3: Review of the metrics assignment, long-term planning/modeling group work, and submission of long-term planning model questions. Note: Held remotely from 18:00 to 19:30
Week 4: Investment calculation and financing
Week 5: Budgeting/forecasting
Week 6: Profitability calculation
Week 7: Case study
Week 8: Guest speaker and summary of the course content and the connections between strategy and finance"

Implementation methods, demonstration and Work&Study

Depending on the implementation. Learning takes place in contact lessons, as independent studies, teamwork and/or online-studies. Learning methods include dialogic, experimental and collaborative contact lessons, simulation practices, guest lecturers, cases and development of the strategy models in student´s own organization. The course includes the assessment of one’s own learning.

Recognition of prior learning (RPL)
If a student has acquired the required competence in previous work tasks, recreational activities or on another course, s/he can show their competence via a demonstration. The demonstration must be agreed with the course teacher. Teaching methods and instruction

The course is conducted in-person, and we meet on Wednesdays from 17:40 to 20:30 in room 1003 in Pasila. The first class is on January 15, 2025, and the last one is on March 12, 2024. Students are expected to attend the in-person sessions, as a virtual version of the course will be available in autumn 2025.

Working life connections

Course assignments are to be applied to your own workplace whenever possible. On the last session, there will be a guest speaker from a company.

Exam dates and re-exam possibilities

The course assessment is based on five assignments submitted during the course. There is no separate exam.

Internationality

The course topics are applicable in both Finnish and international companies.

Learning assignments

The course is completed by submitting five learning assignments:

Metrics assignment.
Long-term planning.
Investment calculation: Moodle exam.
Budgeting assignment.
Profitability calculation: Moodle exam.

The total contribution of all submitted assignments (5 in total) to the overall assessment is 20%.

Assessment methods

There is no exam but the course contains five learning assignments. From each of these you will get a grade 1-5 and they have 20% weight in assessing. All assignments must get a grade in order to pass the course. There is no retakes, so make sure you do your best with each of them.
