A compulsory course on oral and written communication in the English language. Intended for Business Information Technology students.
The course includes surveying the global media on current topics in ICT business, company communications, academic writing, as well as theory and practice of giving presentations in front of an audience. Cultural differences in communication between Anglo-American and Finnish cultures will be discussed.

LEARNING ASSIGNMENT 1: SALES PITCH (5 points). Compulsory. Promoting your company, projects and products in order to recruit graduating university students. Sales pitch conducted in a team of 3 students. Presented to the class with slides as a back-up. LEARNING ASSIGNMENT 2: ARTICLE (10 points). Compulsory. Individual assignment. ICT topic. Written in class according to the instructions given. LEARNING ASSIGNMENT 3: MWC ONLINE EXERCISE (5 additional points given outside the program – on top of the fixed 100). Status: Voluntary exercise for earning extra points. Exercise format: Online Moodle Forum. Post links to two MWC related news articles to the Moodle forum for another student to read. Ask one question per article for him or her to answer. Read another student’s two news articles and answer his or her two questions. Post also a link to one MWC keynote session or video for another student to view and ask one question concerning that clip. Watch someone else’s video and answer the question. LEARNING ASSIGNMENT 4: TOPIC PLAN (5 points). Compulsory. Post the topic plan of your media survey to Moodle. Format: Microsoft Word, HH short assignments template. The topic plan should include a minimum of two links to relevant news articles on the list of references. Add your sources with full information to the list of references. Quote the news articles directly or indirectly with in-text references in the body text. The purpose of the assignment is to do a trial media survey. LEARNING ASSIGNMENT 5: MEDIA SURVEY REPORT (50 points). Compulsory. Based on your media survey, write a 3-5 page report on your findings. Use the standard HAAGA-HELIA reporting guidelines with the proper reference and bibliography procedures. Copy pasted reports are disregarded: no points, no retakes. Your report will be submitted to Urkund automatically. LEARNING ASSIGNMENT 6: OPPONENT PROCESS AND PEER EVALUATION (5 points). Compulsory. Submit a one-page peer evaluation on one of your classmates’ reports to Moodle. Discuss the clarity and contents of the report. Act as an opponent during your classmate’s oral presentation. The opponent chairs the 5-minute discussion at the end of the presentation by commenting and asking questions and giving turns to others for doing so. LEARNING ASSIGNMENT 7: PRESENTATION (25 points). Compulsory. Present your media survey to the class. Duration about 10-15 minutes. PowerPoint slides posted to Moodle one day prior to the presentation. Follow the traditional structure of company presentations (to be discussed during lectures). LEARNING ASSIGNMENT 8: SELF EVALUATION (no points). Compulsory. Evaluate your own learning process using the HH e-form. No points awarded.

Week 34: Introduction. Physical presence in the classroom is mandatory during the first lecture, which will be organized on the 20th of August. Absence results in losing your seat on the course.
Week 35: Motivation/expectations/objectives for the course. Moodle discussed.
Small talk, improvisation & elevator speech/sales pitch. Assignment description for sales pitches and division into groups of 3.
Presentations and ‘story telling’ as a tool of communication.
Week 36: Distant working. Preparing the sales pitch and slides in your team. (NO CONTACT HOURS).
Week 37: Sales pitches presented in class. Provide PowerPoint slides on Moodle one day prior to your presentation. Writing guidelines: How to write an essay? Text on micro and macro level. Referencing and plagiarism.
Week 38: Writing guidelines: How to write a news article?
Week 39: Article written in class. Don’t be absent.
Week 40: Info on Media Survey Report (MSR). Basics of report writing and academic writing in general. Explaining the topic plan assignment. Library visit. Deadline for topic plans: Monday 8th October.
Week 41: Independent work preparing topic plan documents and completing MWC online exercise (NO CONTACT HOURS).
Week 42: Intensive week (NO CONTACT HOURS)
Week 43: Writing clinic & report writing. Media survey presentation guidelines. Feedback on topic plan documents. Processing MWC videos further with group exercises.
Week 44: Guided writing session & consultation. Voluntary session on need basis.
Week 45: NO CONTACT HOURS. Finalizing your reports and preparing for presentations. Slides are required one day prior to your presentation. DEADLINE for the Media Survey Reports: Monday 5th November. DEADLINE for the peer evaluations: Friday 9th November.
Week 46: Presentations with opponents. Peer evaluation.
Week 47: Presentations with opponents. Peer evaluation.
Week 48: Presentations with opponents. Peer evaluation.
Week 49: Students fill in the official course evaluation form (NO CONTACT HOURS).
