After having completed this course, the student is able to:
• Understand the core principles of futures studies and foresight
• Apply foresight methods, to create futures images and prepare for them.
• Evaluate competencies and organizational capabilities in light of future trends, megatrends and uncertainties.
• Analyze personal leadership development in the context of future-oriented thinking and practices.

Introduction to Futures Thinking, Futures Studies and Foresight
• Overview of futures studies: definition, scope, and methods.
• Key concepts in foresight
• Futures thinking in the context of leadership and organizational change.
• Introduction to strategic foresight tools.

Exploring Methods and Building Future Competences
• Practical application of foresight methods
• Group work: Developing visions of possible, probable and preferable futures
• Competences in the face of future uncertainties.
• Identifying skills and leadership qualities needed for future challenges.
• Fostering future-proof organizations

Futures Thinking in Self-Leadership and Personal Reflection
• The role of self-leadership in navigating change and uncertainty.
• Group work presentations: Using foresight methods to address organizational and leadership challenges.
• Individual reflection: Personal growth through futures thinking

This 5 ECTS course is equivalent to 135 hours of work and consists of a preliminary assignment, three on-site days, a group work assignment, a reflective individual assignment and peer assessment of the reflective individual assignment by a fellow student.

In order to pass the course, students must return the pre-course assignment, the reflective individual assignment and the peer assessment, work fully as part of a group and attend the on-site days.

It is not possible to participate in the course remotely.

In an ever-changing world, people and organizations need to be ready for future changes. This intensive course gives tools and skills for futures thinking and foresight. The theme of this course varies annually.

Futures Studies is a science that pursues a sustainable planetary lifestyle and a good life for the individual. Foresight and futures thinking are the application of Futures Studies to the design and pursuit of desirable futures.

3AMK is organising a foresight and futures thinking intensive week, aimed at YAMK students regardless of their level of foresight or futures thinking.

This course unit is part of the master's degree's curriculum. Completion of the course requires master's study entitlement.

When the implementation type of the course is CONTACT, ONLINE or BLENDED it is required that the student is present during those teaching hours that are marked in the study schedule. If you are absent more than 25 %, your grade will be lowered by one. If you are absent more than 50 %, the course is failed

Assessment of the preliminary assignment pass/fail/additional assessment

Assessment of the reflective individual assignment: teacher assessment and written peer assessment from another student. Peer assessment assessment passed/failed.

Assessment of the whole course, pass/fail, requires an approved pre-course assignment, an approved reflective individual assignment and a completed peer assessment, as well as full participation in group work and on-site days.
