Upon completion of the course, the student is able to
- analyze trends and recognize potential risks and issues from an organizational perspective (issue management)
- categorize and prioritize risks and issues and prepare for crisis
- prepare and plan communications to manage potential crisis (crisis management) in an international context
- understand and analyze the effects of various issues/crisis to stakeholders, employees, operations and reputation and brand of an organization
- understand the media practices and take those into account when managing crisis

Further information
Attendance to Course Kick Off or other agreed method of confirming the course participation is mandatory. Course has a short exam at the beginning of the course and successful completion of that is a prerequisite for continuing the course.
Starting level and linkage with other courses
No prerequisites but basic skills and competences of communication theory and practice, experience in using academic sources and understanding of stakeholder theory and definitions provide a good basis for the course.
Assessment criteria
Assessment criteria - grade 1
The student is able to monitor and recognize internal and external issues and crises from an organizational perspective.
The student understands management role in crisis management
The student is familiar with media practices in crisis
The student can analyze and recognize different crisis response strategies
Assessment criteria - grade 3
In addition to the criteria for Grade 1 the student understands and is able to prioritize and analyze the effects that various issues and crisis have on stakeholders, employees, business operations and the reputation of an organization.
Furthermore, the student understands media practices and processes related to an organizational crisis and can plan and prepare for a potential crisis taking those into account.
Assessment criteria - grade 5
In addition to the competences and abilities described for grade 3 the student is able to prepare and implement comprehensive crisis communications strategy and utilize social media for crisis prevention and management as well as reputation management and stakeholder engagement and dialogue purposes.
