After completing the course, the student
- masters the basic functions of a design/layout program
- can combine several visual elements and text into a journalistic entity
- gains a basic understanding of the role and potential of visual communication and graphic design in general
Contents
The student develops an understanding of editorial layout design theory, as well as visual communication theory in general. The student learns how to apply such knowledge into designing effective editorial layouts. Additionally, relevant skills in Photoshop and InDesign to enable implementation of layouts and content are also acquired.
Implementation methods, Demonstration and Work&Study
The students plan and implement an editorial design project, throughout the course.

Assessment criteria
Assessment criteria - grade 1
The student
- has basic knowledge of the process of editorial layout design
- can use graphic design programs on a basic level to produce a layout design solution
Passing the course requires commitment to the assignment work and contact sessions. The grade is based on the editorial material produced (50 %) and on the student’s own commitment and attitude (50 %).
Assessment criteria - grade 3
The student
- is familiar with the process of editorial layout design and visual communication in general
- can create a visual concept that supports the communication of the editorial content
- can use image processing and graphic design programs to produce a layout design solution

The student
- has a strong understanding of the process and potential of editorial layout design and visual communication in general
- can create a visual concept that supports and enhances the communication of the editorial content
- can use image processing and graphic design programs to produce a flawless layout design solution
