Upon successful completion of the virtual course or the acquisition of equivalent knowledge in another context, the student is able to
• identify trends in Knowledge Management (KM) and Knowledge Leadership (KL) and observe their impact from both an IT and a business perspective.
• use theoretical models and frameworks for the comprehension of knowledge management (KM) in a business context.
• can recognize and analyse KM as a component of business development opportunities, and explain the importance of KM and knowledge leadership in today's business environment and organisations.
• Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to demonstrate to understand the significance of knowledge management (KM) and knowledge leadership in business. A broad knowledge of business and information technology, and a fundamental understanding of information management, will help student succeed in this course.

This fully virtual course is an independent study course. There are no special prerequisites but the student must be capable of self-directed schedule planning and independent learning without supervision during the implementation. If needed, the guidance and feedback are provided through the study platform, the Moodle learning environment.

Learning material and recommended literature

The course material will be updated on a regular basis, in accordance with the progress of the course theme. It is based on course books, research articles, webinars and discussion forums. It is accessible via the study platform.

Content scheduling

The virtual course is scheduled to commence at the beginning of 2025, in accordance with the Haaga-Helia UAS academic calendar. A course is considered complete for assessment purposes when all required assignments, essays and online discussions have been returned. However, the entire course may be assessed during the virtual course. Final grades will be published three weeks after the end of the course.

If you are absent more than 25%, your grade will be lowered by one. If you are absent more than 50%, the course is failed.

Upon completion of this virtual course or acquiring equivalent knowledge elsewhere, the student
- can recognize the importance of Knowledge Management (KM) and Information Management for the organization.
- can apply and understand KM processes, methods and theories and recognize KM as an organizational resource that is managed to support business development
- can identify and apply information and information management as a strategic tool in IT and business environments.

The course topics include study cases and practices.

- Knowledge Management (KM) and Knowledge Leadership concepts and terminology, frameworks, methods and theories.
- Describe the opportunities, benefits and challenges that KM can bring to an organisation and describe and practise the organisational impact of KM and knowledge leadership.
- Gain an understanding of how to use KM as an organisational resource and as a managed way of working, for example in development and innovation functions.
- Learn how to identify KM and leadership as part of professional competence and as part of growing organisational development.
- Content may change during implementation phase.

The Virtual course is an independent study course of 5 course-credits.
The course is self-paced, with students working online individually or in groups. Active individual or group work will be a requirement for this course. Some course implementations may include online teaching sessions, but these typically require a student to be online no more than twice a month.

The studies utilise student-centred, research-oriented, and functional teaching methods. Guidance and feedback are provided through the Haaga-Helia UAS online learning environment.

Recognition of Learning. The Recognition of Learning tasks are to be completed by the student within the first two weeks, following the instructions provided in the virtual course at the beginning of the course. Recognition of Learning can be used to complete either part or all of the virtual course.

Welcome to the virtual course to explore contemporary perspectives on the topics of Knowledge Management (KM) and KM Leadership. KM is a managerial tool and KM Leadership methods for IT and business development through which we understand organisations as entities that e.g. collect data. The course covers topics such as KM leadership and KM teams and how their activities contribute to organisational development. During the virtual course you will study academic and international study materials independently or in a group. The course will be an exploration and reflection of KM & KM leadership from both IT and management perspectives across organisational boundaries.
