A student gets knowledge and understanding of the techniques and methods of defining and managing corporate IT development projects/ IT-projects and their implementation as the disciplined and managed projects.

A student gets the ability to plan information systems development projects and to contribute in such projects.

A student is capable to work in a role of junior level project manager or in project management team

The course is based on the case material and exercises taken from the true IT-projects.

The course is started by making sense with the key terms and concepts which is followed by a tutorial entry assignment focusing on the core of managing projects, that is about defining the scope and schedule for a simple IT-project.

Learning further on is divided by major themes linked loosely to the main phases of the project lifecycle that are initialization, planning and execution of an IT-project.

Theme 1 is about initializing for the project holding an analysis of a true IT-project where the student(s) (either individually or in teams) shall do conclusions of desired benefits by the case company on top of the given material. A such this assignment is focused on the very first activities prior to start of actual planning and execution. Doing a business case is a short extension after the assignment.

Theme 2 is holding a few key activities the next theme deals with risk, stakeholder and communication management that are activities running through the entire project life cycle from the initialization thru planning and execution

Theme 3 is a brief extension to the discussion of planning phase, which were already covered in the first entry task. Here the point is deepening understanding of the planning techniques and methods

Theme 4: Why do IT-projects fail? Understanding the causes behind failures and challenges in IT-projects as well as the characteristics of successful IT-projects and optimizing the benefits. Rationale of failures, How to improve the successfulness of IT-Projects and about the benefits realization management are the discussed topics here.

The people perspective in projects is exercised by means of minor project management assignments related to challenges faced by project team and manager. They are scheduled to be done in parallel of the actual themes as a collection of assignments of their own.

The course is an online course run in 14 weeks both in the autumn and spring semesters but it is also adapted for a VIR-course and 8 weeks blended course in Finnish (TIKO).

The online lessons are organized in terms of biweekly system - lessons every second week and working among the given assignments in between.
The content of course could be adapted by request for a passing grade option which is doing less by a grade 1 - 2.

Application for recognition of prior learning or by choice, studifying one's working in company is considered by request.

Studying project management is widely recognized by employers which is the feedback from the Haaga-Helia's graduates in working life and it also prepares you, not just for working as a project manager, but for other types of managerial tasks, too.

In fact, students who invest in learning project management are able to work systematically and consistently. Moreover they are usually promoted much more easily to more challenging job positions.

Evaluation is based on (1) the assignments ; (2) activity on lessons (basically the presentations) (3) managment exercises and (4) learning key terms and (5) Exam.

Mandatory requirements: (1) The orientation course – orientation to business driven ICT is completed. (2) Innovation and project working course is completed

Highly recommended prerequisites: (1) Student has done the work placement and has basic knowledge and/or experience of project work and the development process of business information systems.

Note that the Project management course offers a launch pad for other courses which are structured by means of project working. Moreover, participation on the project management championship - PMC - goes effortlessly and enable a student earn 3 credits (PMC is studified as a course, too).

A student has a bounded understanding of the facts and knowledge of the subjects in question (Modules 1-5) and he/she is exercising the given tools and methods just passably. The output (essays) is just loosely if not at all bounded on the references.

The overall command of project management framework is modest and naming the uses of particular methods, tools and practises along the project lifecycle is uncertain and debatable.

A student has a fair understanding of the facts and knowledge of the subjects in question (Modules 1-5) and he/she is exercising the given tools and methods somewhat properly. The output (essays) is grounded tolerably on the references.

A student is able to bring his/her own thoughts and examples on top of the written essays.

The overall command of project management framework is in progress and some misunderstandings of the appropriate uses of particular methods, tools and practises may occur.

A student has an excellent understanding of the facts and knowledge of the subjects in question (Modules 1-5) and he/she is mastering the given/needed tools and methods in a profound way. The output (essays) is grounded comprehensively on the given references as well as own searches of appropriate references.

A student is able to bring his/her own thoughts and examples on top of the written essays and the quality of producing text is more like a synthesis on top of the source material and own observations.

He/she has a clear command about the project management framework, how and when to use particular tools and methods and practises in managing project.
