Intro

During the course the student will review the elementary vocabulary and structures of the Finnish language needed in routine everyday situations.

Learning objectives

The student will learn everyday vocabulary and basic grammar and familiarize oneself with topics such as greetings, time expressions, shopping, hobbies, studying, etc. During the course the student also has a chance to practice and improve one’s independent language learning skills. The target level on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages CEFR is A1.1.

This course gives you a good review of the basics of Finnish language and supplements the Haaga-Helia Finnish language and culture 1 and 2 courses. During the course you will learn and review the elementary vocabulary and structures of Finnish language needed in routine everyday situations. In the contact lessons focus on speaking practice.

We recommend that you to practice your skills in real life if possible - use the language and you will soon be drawing new hopscotch squares into your language learning path!

Contents

The topics are (1) me and others, (2) food and drink, (3) leisure and family and (4) work and studies.
The course will cover:
· Basic characteristics of the Finnish language
· Basics of pronunciation
· Introducing oneself and others
· Basic vocabulary for everyday needs:
· Greetings, key phrases and vocabulary in everyday situations
· Numbers and time expressions
· Key phrases and vocabulary for shopping and ordering
· Basic structures for everyday needs
· Verb conjugation (types 1-3) o Partitive case

· Basic questions
· Basics of spoken Finnish
· Basic culture elements

Implementation methods, demonstration and Work&Study

This is a blended course in beginner Finnish, and it comprises of virtual self-study combined with contact lessons. Completion of the course requires active independent work and self-study (virtual part) as well as completion of the learning assignments, self-assessment and regular attendance in the contact lessons.

When the implementation type of the course is contact, online or blended it is required that the student is present during those teaching hours that are marked in the study schedule. If you are absent more than 25%, your grade will be lowered by one. If you are absent more than 50%, the course is failed

Starting level and linkage with other courses

No prerequisites. Suitable for students with no prior Finnish skills or students who have studied a little bit of Finnish and need to revise the very basics. Level A1.3.

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

The course is assessed pass/fail.

Assessment criteria:
Completion of the virtual part, and active participation during the course, learning assignments and discussions.
