Learning objectives

After this course, the student knows the basic technologies of 3D scanning ands understands how they can be used to convert real world objects into their digital twins. He/she understands the basic similarities and differences of the technologies and can pick a useful technique for a given scanning task
A student who has completed this course will be able to take a real object through the scanning process and into a digital environment such as Blender.

Contents

The software and equipment used are
RealityCapture
Luma.ai

The content areas are:
Laser Triangulation Scanning: how lasers are used to measure the distance to a surface by triangulating the reflected light.
Structured Light Scanning: how patterns of light are projected onto a surface, and the deformed patterns are analyzed to reconstruct the 3D shape.
Time-of-Flight (ToF) Scanning: how ToF cameras measure the time it takes for light to travel from the source to the object and back to determine distance.
Photogrammetry: the principles of photogrammetry, where multiple images of an object are analyzed to triangulate and reconstruct its 3D structure.
Structured Light Scanning: how patterns of light are projected onto a surface, and the deformed patterns are analyzed to reconstruct the 3D shape.
3D Scanning Software: Overview of software used for 3D data processing and reconstruction. This will include both open-source and commercial solutions.

Starting level and linkage with other courses

DIG012AS2AE Basic 3D Design with Blender MUST be taken prior to this course with a good grade, or, the student must display adequate design competence using Blender, 3DS Max, or Cinema 4D.
Any other 3D package can be considered, if it exports STL file format files.

Implementation methods, demonstration and Work&Study

VIRTUAL
In case of RPL or work&study, please contact the teacher of implementation.

Assessment criteria - grade 1

When the implementation type of the course is CONTACT, ONLINE or BLENDED it is required that the student is present during those teaching hours that are marked in the study schedule. If you are absent more than 25 %, your grade will be lowered by one. If you are absent more than 50 %, the course is failed.

1 - The student scores at least 40/100 on the Moodle exam and is able to produce a simple scanned object.

Assessment criteria - grade 3

3 - The student scores at least 60/100 on the exam and is able to produce a well-scanned object.

Assessment criteria - grade 5

5 - The student scores at least 80/100 on the exam and is able to produce a high-quality scanned object or objects.
