Learning objectives
The objective of the course is to learn the basics of the Swedish language and culture in Finland , and Sweden. Virtual Swedish from Scratch -course is a virtual course of 3 ECTS at Haaga-Helia Porvoo. The course is planned in a Nordplus Language project Swedish for beginners - Multilingualism to Enhance Employability.
Learning outcomes
• You learn the elementary structures of Swedish, and you learn to write simple texts and to use Swedish in basic everyday situations.
• You familiarize yourself with the basic cultural aspects of the Nordic language area.
• Your target level on the Common European Framework of Reference for languages is A1.
Contents
• Basics of pronunciation.
• Vocabulary to introduce yourself and to describe where you come from and what you do and what you study.
• Basic structures of the language
• First steps in understanding and speaking the language.
• Basics of writing in Swedish
• Cultural elements of the Nordic countries with emphasis on Sweden and Finland, and work life

No liaisons to other studies.
NB the course is for absolute beginners in Swedish.

Assessment criteria - grade 1
Can recognize and respond to basic greetings. Understands simple classroom instructions in Swedish. Can introduce themselves using simple phrases. Can ask and answer basic questions about personal information (e.g., name, age).
Can read and understand simple words and phrases (e.g., colours, numbers). Can follow simple written instructions. Can write their name and simple words. Can copy simple sentences. Can identify basic cultural symbols of Sweden and Finland (e.g., flags, traditional foods).
Assessment criteria - grade 3
Can understand simple conversations about everyday topics. Can follow more complex classroom instructions. Can participate in simple dialogues. Can express likes and dislikes.
Can read short texts and answer questions about them. Can recognize and understand common signs and notices. Can write short sentences and simple paragraphs. Can describe familiar objects and activities.
Can describe some cultural traditions and holidays in Sweden and Finland. Can compare basic cultural differences and similarities between the two countries.
Assessment criteria - grade 5
Can understand conversations on a wider range of topics (e.g., weather, daily routines). Can follow stories and simple narratives. Can engage in longer conversations and express opinions. Can ask for and give directions.
Can read and understand short stories and informational texts. Can identify main ideas and details in texts. Can write short essays and personal letters. Can describe experiences and events in detail.
Can explain cultural practices and their significance in Sweden and Finland. Can discuss the impact of cultural differences on dail
