Intro

Do you want to become a member of the academic community and promote your ideas, expressing yourself in a convincing manner? Do you want to enhance your academic writing skills to use in appropriate and relevant academic texts? In that case, this course is for you. You will learn the basics of Academic English including the keys for a great writing style based on a good command of the structure, vocabulary and referencing technique.

Learning objectives

After completing the course, the student

- can employ the different functions of sentence and paragraph types to express information
- acquires an increased vocabulary suited for academic English
- learns the standard and academically accepted structure of an essay/report/thesis to better express one’s intentions more clearly in writing
- learns how to use a contemporary referencing system

Contents

Students learn, from the elements of the sentence and the paragraph, an approach that is expandable to encompass the demands of writing a full-fledged thesis in academically appropriate English, as follows:

- Academic Writing Style
- Report Organization
- Logical Organization of Ideas
- Paragraph Structure
- Academic Vocabulary
- Referencing

Implementation methods, demonstration and Work&Study

In virtual courses the student studies independently in a virtual learning environment. Students can communicate with other students and the teacher through a virtual learning environment. Students can complete assignments and possible exams at a time that suits them best.

If you have previous knowledge, the course can also be completed through the RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) procedure.

Assessment criteria - grade 1

When the implementation type of the course is CONTACT, ONLINE or BLENDED it is required that the student is present during those teaching hours that are marked in the study schedule. If you are absent more than 25 %, your grade will be lowered by one. If you are absent more than 50 %, the course is failed.

Pass/Fail
The course is passed by completion of compulsory exercises on Moodle.
