Learning objectives

After completing the course, student shall be able to:
• understand the concept and scope of the Internet of Things (IoT) and Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) in the current business and industrial landscape.
• identify and analyze the application of IoT and IIoT in various business settings.
• have an understanding of factors that influence successful integration of the IoT and IIoT in a business landscape.
• assess the suitability and benefits of certain IoT enablers in various business models to achieve competitive advantage.
• apply the key concepts of IoT and IIoT in possible business transformation thinking and reasoning.
• ideate the role of new technologies in conducting potential businesses in future,

and will have participated in a team that built an IoT device.

Contents

The contents will handle the
* IoT landscape
* IoT business outlook
* technologies relevant to IoT
* the use of open source tools in building IoT systems
* building an IoT system in teams

Starting level and linkage with other courses

Preferably 3rd semester onwards. Some prior knowledge of business and management fields is a desirable prerequisite, but not mandatory. This course does not require specific IT/software related knowledge, but does require an experimental mindset.

Implementation methods, demonstration and Work&Study

An enrolled student can apply for recognition of prior learning (RPL). S/he must demonstrate suitable competence in at least three of the five learning objectives, which has been acquired through active participation in a related project or during job. In addition, an RPL applicant must present a business idea surrounding the application of IoT/IIoT in a business. The presentation and material shall be assessed.

Assessment criteria - grade 1

When the implementation type of the course is contact, online or blended it is required that the student is present during those teaching hours that are marked in the study schedule. If you are absent more than 25 %, your grade will be lowered by one. If you are absent more than 50 %, the course is failed.

The student is able to define the key concepts and topics of the IoT & IIoT. S/he recognizes the scope and purpose of these concepts in current business. S/he can describe business and management from the viewpoint of new technological thinking. S/he knows the basics of building an IoT device.

Assessment criteria - grade 3

In addition to the competences in grade 1, the student can apply the key concepts in her/his thinking and reasoning. S/he can evaluate the application of these models in the industrial sectors. S/he is able to acknowledge the potential benefits and value in strategy work. S/he particpates in the building of an IoT device.

Assessment criteria - grade 5

Grade 5: In addition to the competences in grades 1 & 3, the student can analyze the purpose of an organization to adapt to the IoT/IIoT business models in creating value. S/he develops business and management from the viewpoints of digital thinking. S/he is able to think critically and solve problems in a changing operational environment. S/he is a valuable member of the team building an IoT device.

Learning materials

• Course learning materials include reading text material, case studies, industry reports, and watching videos. Each of the five module has short tasks, quizzes and assignments to ensure student learning.
• Course related material shall be shared in Moodle environment.

Further information

This course will be completed in teams, and good teamwork requires student presence at all sessions.
