Learning objectives

The course enables students to develop their knowledge and competencies as HR professionals in an international business context.

On the successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
- understand the strategic view of international human resource management (IHRM)
- distinguish the fundamentals of international HRM
- recognize the complexity of IHRM and the challenges of it in the global business
- be aware of the vast number of choices within IHRM practices
- develop own cultural awareness in international work
- create trust in a virtual context and work virtually
- apply different kinds of virtual tools and methods in project work
- assess and give suggestions for IHRM related issues in multinational corporate (MNC) context

- Culture, cross-cultural awareness and how to build trust with people from different cultures
- Balance between local and global HRM
- Organizing an International HR Department
- Ethics, sustainability and responsibility in HRM

Depending on the collaboration project, the course focus may fall under the following core HRM themes:
- Recruitment and selection
- Expatriation
- Performance management
- Human resource development (HRD)
- Total rewards / International compensation

Starting level and linkage with other courses

The student should have completed basic studies of business and HRM or acquired similar knowledge.
The student should have a working proficiency of verbal and written English language to join an advanced-level HRM course.
This course is part of the HR and leadership (HR ja johtaminen) study path in the Finnish BBA degree programme.

Implementation methods, demonstration and Work&Study

This course is organized in collaboration with Haaga-Helia partner universities, with virtual collaboration (or possible study trips) between the universities. The focus and content of the course implementations are created together with the chosen partner universities.

The learning assignments consist of, for example, virtual team projects, assignments and independent work.

If you have acquired the required competence in previous work tasks or recreational activities you can show the competence with a demonstration. The course teachers give more information and instructions for RPL and Work&Study.

Assessment criteria - grade 1

When the implementation type of the course is CONTACT, ONLINE or BLENDED it is required that the student is present during those teaching hours that are marked in the study schedule. If you are absent more than 25 %, your grade will be lowered by one. If you are absent more than 50 %, the course is failed.

- Knowledge: You know the key concepts within the course’s scope, but are yet to develop the general view and the big picture of the subject matter.
- Skills: You can complete given tasks and assignments with assistance. You need to develop how to apply knowledge.
- Competence: You demonstrate some ability to perform skills and have basic knowledge, but you have difficulty to manage without assistance.

Assessment criteria - grade 3

- Knowledge: You know the key concepts well and can explain how the theories and models function and the tools are used. You have a general view of the subject matter.
- Skills: You complete given tasks and assignments either independently or with a team. You apply knowledge in hands-on business related situations. You can critique your own practice and identify ways to improve.
- Competence: You demonstrate sufficient ability to perform skills and have basic to good knowledge. You can perform independently, but you have some challenges in passing on your skills and knowledge to others. You have an interest in professional development.

Assessment criteria - grade 5

- Knowledge: You have a strong command of the key and related concepts. You can critically evaluate theories, models and tools. You can demonstrate explicit knowledge of the subject matter, and how it relates to other disciplines.
- Skills: You apply knowledge in demanding business related situations. You can prioritize and critically select tools and methods for solving complex problems in the subject matter.
- Competence: You execute skills with natural proficiency and you have detailed and explicit knowledge. You can perform independently and you are also able and actively willing to help others develop and pass on your skills. You have an attitude of continuous professional development.

Learning materials

The teachers will announce learning material in the learning platform used in the course. Strong focus is also placed on the student’s ability to search for relevant material.

The collaboration partners at the moment are the University of Pécs in Hungary and Hanze University of Applied Sciences, in the Netherlands.
