After having completed this course, the student:
• Is able to explain the role of simulation in analyzing and improving supply chain performance.
• Is able to apply simulation tools to model supply chain processes.
• Is able to interpret simulation results to support data-driven decision-making in supply chain operations.
• Is able to evaluate alternative supply chain strategies through simulation scenarios.
• Is able to present simulation-based findings clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Contents

• Supply chain dynamics
• Simulation in operations management
• Simulation tools
• Scenario analysis and experimentation
• Inventory and logistics simulation
• Performance measurement in supply chains

Starting level and linkage with other courses

Before completing this course, the student must have completed the course Principles of Logistics and Supply Chain Management or otherwise acquired equivalent competence.

Implementation methods, demonstration and Work&Study

Contact/Contact Blended
Descriptions of implementation methods can be found in Haaga-Helia's website: https://www.haaga-helia.fi/en/implementation-types. You can complete the course unit by demonstrating or by Work&Study even if the course unit doesn't have DEMO or WORKSTUDY implementations. More information about recognition of learning at Haaga-Helia's website: https://www.haaga-helia.fi/en/career-planning/recognition-learning.

Assessment criteria - grade 1

When the implementation type of the course is CONTACT, ONLINE or BLENDED it is required that the student is present during those teaching hours that are marked in the study schedule. If you are absent more than 25 %, your grade will be lowered by one. If you are absent more than 50 %, the course is failed.
The student participates in the simulation games and is able to follow instructions and make basic decisions. The student demonstrates a limited ability to interpret the results or connect them to supply chain principles.

Assessment criteria - grade 3

The student actively participates in simulation games, makes informed decisions during gameplay, and reflects on outcomes with moderate accuracy. The student demonstrates the ability to evaluate supply chain scenarios, identify challenges and explain how supply chain decisions influenced the simulation performance. The student interprets results correctly and demonstrates moderate ability to link simulation outcomes to practical supply chain decisions.

Assessment criteria - grade 5

The student engages critically with simulation gameplay, consistently makes strategic decisions aligned with supply chain objectives, and provides in-depth analysis of the outcomes with actionable insights into supply chain performance. The student is able to evaluate different decision paths, explain their impact on performance, and communicate insights clearly and persuasively with a data-driven mindset. Results are interpreted with depth, and presentations are clear, structured, and suitable for professional decision-making contexts.
